Balkan Taksim
Romania
Balkan Taksim, a Romanian music group, stands out for its unique blend of popular rhythms and electronic sounds. Their music draws inspiration from the Carpathian mountains, the Balkans, and Anatolia, creating an energetic and vibrant musical tapestry. Influences from trip-hop, Yugoslav rock, and the psychedelic era of the 1960s can be heard in their tracks. Traditional instruments like the Turkish saz, Romanian cobza, Bosnian šargija, Ottoman tanbur, and various bagpipes interact with studio-generated rhythms using synthesizers and samplers.
Balkan Taksim’s songs explore themes of love, dance, memory, and death. While some of their tunes incorporate popular poetry and futuristic visions, the musical folklore of the Balkans or Carpathians serves as a backdrop for innovative sonic compositions.
The band has performed at numerous festivals and clubs, including Paléo Festival de Nyon, Paraiso Festival in Madrid, See Festival | BOZAR in Brussels, Electric Castle Festival in Cluj, Jazz in the Park Festival in Cluj, Astra Film Festival in Sibiu, Palac Akropolis in Prague, Kino Šiška in Ljubljana, Nova Cvernovka in Bratislava, A38 in Budapest, and many others.
Balkan Taksim’s music has been featured on various radio stations, with notable hosts such as Iggy Pop, Nick Luscombe, Gilles Peterson, Stuart Maconie, Cerys Matthews, and Kevin Cole. In 2021, the band released their debut album, Disko Telegraf, a double LP, on the renowned world-music label Buda Musique in Paris. Europavox also released their music.
