Ali Doğan Gönültaş
Turkey
Ali Doğan Gönültaş, born in the mid-1980s in Kiğı, a rural village nestled in the rugged mountains of Eastern Anatolia, belonged to a Kurdish family. Like most Alevi families, music held immense significance in their lives, serving as a vital medium for preserving their rich history. However, the family faced the challenge of emigration and relocated to the bustling city of Istanbul.
In Istanbul, Ali’s natural musical talent was nurtured by his teachers and elders. Recognizing his gift, they encouraged him to pursue singing. Ali’s musical journey was further enriched by his artistic endeavors and composition work, which honed his natural musicality.
During his university studies in archaeology and cinema, Ali developed a profound focus on research and source analysis. This academic background equipped him with the ability to translate his knowledge into a captivating artistic and communicative language.
After a decade of dedication, Ali Doğan produced and released his first album, “Kiğı,” in 2022. This album, the culmination of fifteen years of research, conversations with elders, and meticulous work on musical arrangements, sheds light on the languages and cultures of marginalized communities in Turkey, including the Kurds and Armenians. “Kiğı” not only resonated with audiences but also paved the way for Ali’s performances on renowned European stages.
The reception of his album “Keyeyî” in 2024 further solidified his reputation as a musical virtuoso. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Ali performed in 18 countries across Europe and the Middle East. He graced prestigious venues such as Fundação Gulbenkian in Portugal, where his Grande Auditório (seating 1,203) was sold out, and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in Germany, where he performed two sold-out trio performances and one with dengbêj Saîdê Goyî.
Ali’s dynamic live performances extended beyond concert halls to open-air stages like the Rudolstadt Festival in Germany and the town hall square in Valencia, Spain. In 2025, he continued his musical journey, performing in Lithuania, Poland, India, and now, for the first time, in Bulgaria in October with his captivating show, “So Alive.”
