When the Scene Curates Itself

14 Oct 2025 | 15:30 | SoRight Hall
Forget algorithms and headliner bidding wars — some festivals are still built the old-school way: by the scene, for the scene. These aren’t boutique playgrounds or afterthoughts to corporate behemoths; they’re culture-driving hubs that set the tone for what’s next, years before the mainstream catches up. But in an era of over-saturation, disappearing attention spans, and rising production costs, how do niche festivals maintain their edge without selling out?

This panel explores how these festivals stay weird, brave, and relevant — by letting the community lead. From showcasing hyperlocal talent to importing underground acts the majors won’t touch, we’ll dig into the creative strategies, political instincts, and personal networks that shape their lineups. We’ll also examine how these festivals build scenes, not just stages — creating spaces where movements are born, not just content.

Who gets to decide what’s cool? How do you grow without going bland? And can curation still be punk in an industry obsessed with metrics?
